The Nuttall Fire Complex reached 55 percent containment on Saturday, as rains blanketed the area late in the afternoon. The Nuttall and Gibson fires have consumed 29,000 acres. High humidity and precipitation in the region have been favorable in assisting firefighters.

Widely scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms are expected today through Tuesday. If heavy rains develop, flash flooding and debris flows could occur below burned out canyons and near steep slopes.

Roads in the vicinity of the fire remain closed to all traffic not involved in the suppression efforts. The threat to residences and businesses in the fire area has been lessened as successful firelines and burnouts have been completed. While evacuations are still in place from West Peak to the base of the mountain, property owners are expected to be allowed back into the area within the next one to two weeks.

“The work of our firefighters has been arduous, and yet they have successfully suppressed this fire and preserved the unique resources of this area. I am very proud of their efforts, as well as the outstanding support and encouragement we have generously received from the folks in this community,” said Southwest Area Type 1 Team Incident Commander Dan Oltrogge.

Beginning today, many of the fire resources will be released and firefighters will return home. On Tuesday, the Type 1 team will transition management of the Nuttall Fire Complex to the Type 2 team with Incident Commander Kurt Winchester.
