Gibson Fire Added to Nuttall Fire Complex |
|
The Southwest Area Incident Management Team assumed responsibility of the Gibson Fire this morning. The Gibson Fire, approximately 10 acres in size, was lightning-caused on June 22nd and has been monitored since that time. It is located in very steep and rugged terrain that is too hazardous for fire fighters to access, approximately six miles east of the Nuttall Fire. The Gibson Fire will continue to be monitored and helicopters will drop water on it to slow its progress. The Nuttall Fire Complex now consists of the Nuttall and Gibson Fires. On the Nuttall Fire yesterday, crews successfully burned from perimeter control lines to prevent further growth. Fire fighters were also able to successfully contain and hold a large spot fire that grew on the southwestern flank. The entire western edge is now secure. Last night, a burn out operation was conducted along the southeastern perimeter; crews are currently working to contain a ˝ acre spot fire in that area. A burnout operation will resume along the eastern flank and smoke will be visible from Pima, Safford, and surrounding areas. Structural protection mitigation measures will also continue in Old Columbine. Resources assisting with the Nutall Fire Complex suppression effort include ten Type 1 “Hotshot” crews, four Type 2 crews, eight helicopters, twelve engines, one dozer, four water tenders, and numerous support personnel. A total of 586 people are assigned. The fire is 1,350 acres in size, ten percent contained, and an expected containment date has not been set. A precautionary evacuation is still in effect from West Peak to Old Columbine. State Route 366, also known as the Swift Trail, will remain closed to public access throughout the Fourth of July weekend to ensure firefighter and public safety. The road will be reopened as soon as conditions improve and fire activity no longer presents a public safety hazard.
